Conference Title “Educational success against the odds. A life span perspective”
Modern societies are successful only if they involve the largest possible number of individuals in life-long learning. A condition for this to be brought about is that education research gains a
deeper understanding on how to overcome the various obstacles individuals face when trying to make personal use of knowledge that has emerged in the process of cultural development. Major
challenges education research and politics face relate to disadvantages in learning due to socio-economic hardship, insufficient language proficiency, group-based social stereotypes, or
institutionalized educational offers not being tailored to individual learners' special needs or exceptionally high abilities. What is more, life-long learning is often hampered by a lack of high
quality institutionalized learning opportunities, and by individuals having to cope with difficulties arising from mental decline and health-related problems in older age.
Themed “Educational success against the odds. A life span perspective” the conference wants to bring together scholars from various disciplines, in particular Education Science, Psychology, Didactics, Sociology, Linguistics and Economics, tackling the above described challenges in an interdisciplinary perspective: what contributes to successful learning under difficult circumstances, in particular resilience factors and characteristics of educational offers, for individuals at various stages of the life course.
The conference is dedicated to interdisciplinary cutting edge research on this topic and addresses the following questions:
International scholars will discuss various aspects of the topic. Five internationally highly visible scholars have already accepted our request for keynotes, addressing how to cope with the challenges coinciding with low socio-economic status, special needs, or insufficient language proficiency, how to make better use of exceptionally high talent, or of the strengths in memory and information processing skills in different stages of the life span, or of the structural and organizational features of varying educational institutions. Also, five invited symposia will shed light on factors supporting or hindering life-long academic success under difficult circumstances from different disciplinary perspectives.
The pre-conference provides the opportunity for young sholars to present their work and have it discussed by excellent scholars in the field. It offers two lectures, one on key current issues concerning the overall conference theme and one on leading-edge methodological approaches. Particular attention will be given to paper applications on the conference theme “Educational success against the odds”.
The pre-conference is open to a limited number of doctoral students and recent PhD graduates (about 40 participants) from didactics, economics, education science, psychology, and sociology. Participants of the pre-conference are required to be or become associate members of the GEBF (latest at the first day of the pre-conference).
Further information about the registration process for the pre-conference can be found in the Call for Applications.
